Australian Prime Minister Bruce has announced a vital government measure to parliament. The government is appointing an independent, non-political committee of four members, seriously considering the migration issue and the development of Australia’s natural resources.
Bruce said: “Australia’s future security is tied to the Empire’s position in the world. The major factor in this is the better distribution of the white population of the Empire, in which Australia can do more than any other part of the Empire. If Britain is prosperous, that country is a good buyer of Australian products, so Australian production increases. Australia’s problems can be solved by the migration into Australia of people of our own race, who will allow us to remain a British community, something we value most highly.
Australia is the largest undeveloped country in the world. It is inconceivable that the public conscience of nations will allow a great continent to remain inhabited by only six million souls, while the resources of Australia, if fully developed, would probably resolve most of the economic problems the world’s facing. We will be brought before the world’s court of public opinion and questioned about what we are doing with our great continent. In a quarter century, Australia’s population has increased by 2 million, that of the U.S. by 30 million, Canada by 3 ¾ million, China’s by 41 million and Japan’s by 13 million, and yet Australia has greater absorption capacity than any of these other countries. Australia can accept an unlimited number of people. As it develops, it creates new industries. It cannot develop without people, and it cannot absorb people without development.”

De Australische premier, Bruce, heeft aan het parlement een belangrijken regereeringsmaatregel medegedeeld. De regeering stelt nl. in een onafhankelijke, niet-politieke commissie van vier leden, die zich ernstig zal bezighouden met het migratie vraagstuk en de ontwikkeling van Australië natuurlijke hulpbronnen.
Bruce zei daarbij: “Australië’s toekomstige veiligheid is verbonden aan de positie van het Empire in de wereld. De groote factor daarbij is de betere verdeeling der blanke bevolking van het Empire, waarin Australië meer kan doen dan eenig ander rijksdeel. Als Brittannië welvaren is, is dat land een goede afnemer van Australische producten, zoodat de Australische productie stijgt. Australië’s problemen kunnen opgelost worden door de migratie baar Australië van menschen van ons eigen ras, die ons een Britsche gemeenschap zullen laten blijven, iets waarop wij den hoogste prijs stellen.
Australië is het grootste onontgonnen land ter wereld. Het is niet aan te nemen, dat het openbaar geweten der naties zal dulden, dat ’n groot continent met slechts 6 miljoen zielen bevolkt blijft, terwijl de hulpbronnen van Australië, indien tot volle ontwikkeling gebracht, waarschijnlijk de meeste economische problemen, waarvoor de wereld staat, zouden oplossen. Wij zullen gedaagd worden voor het recht der publieke opinie van de wereld en ondervraagd wat wij met ons groot continent doen. In een kwart eeuw is Australië’s bevolking gestegen met 2 miljoen, die der V.S. met 30 miljoen, die van Canada met 3 ¾ miljoen, die van China met 41 miljoen en die van Japan met 13 miljoen, en toch heeft Australië grooter opnemingscapaciteiten dan één dezer andere landen. Australië kan onbeperkt menschen opnemen. Naarmate het zich ontwikkelt, schept het nieuwe industrieën. Het kan zich niet ontwikkelen zonder menschen, en kan geen menschen absorberen zonder ontwikkeling.” |
