Australian Emigration News. More Dutch people wanted
To a question posed in Canberra's Federal Parliament by Liberal Member of Parliament A. R. Downer from South Australia whether the number of Dutch migrants – particularly for rural businesses – could be increased, the Minister for Emigration, the Hon. Harold E. Holt, that the requirements and conditions imposed on aspiring emigrants from the Netherlands are now applied more liberally to maintain the flow of newcomers.
Minister Holt also pointed to the ever-increasing stream of newcomers who came from Holland in recent years. In 1949, 1,200 Dutch emigrants came to Australia. Last year this was already 10,000, and during the first 6 months of this year, 10,000 was passed.
The minister also said that until recently, the government had tried to increase the percentage of bachelors or workers with small families because these are less of a burden on the national economy. Next year, a much higher rate of workers will be selected for agriculture and livestock than has been the case before.
VETERINARIANS FROM EUROPE
The New South Wales Government has decided to amend the Veterinarians Act to allow European-qualified veterinarians to practice in this state. Veterinarians from European countries will be allowed to practice for a period of five years. After this period, the position will be further reviewed. Eligible are European veterinarians who have studied in their country for at least four years before obtaining the degree required to practice in their country of origin. Before European vets are allowed to practice in New South Wales, they must first have been in Australia for a year. They also have to take an exam in a few subjects.
(As reported last week, talks are also being held in Canberra to make it possible for European doctors without having to attend years of college again. However, if an agreement is reached in Canberra, it still depends on whether the various states want to change their physician laws accordingly. Ed.)
EMIGRATION AND HOUSING
The Minister for Emigration. H. E. Holt told Parliament in Canberra that twice as many new houses are being built today as in the last pre-war year. The minister owed this outstanding result largely to the contribution made by emigrants in the construction industry.
This year, 82,000 houses will be completed, which the minister considers sufficient for the expected 45,000 marriages and the population increase due to emigration. He made these statements in response to a request from Victorian Socialist MP A.C. Bird that the number of emigrants should be reduced to end what he called "the growing and bitter competition between emigrants and Australian-born citizens for the possession of a house'.
