Emigration in 1909

“Why don't you go back”

'We only pay peanuts in rent so that we have enough left over from our retirement pension to eat well and go to the club...' These are the words of Maria Tonkin, born Van Santen, who came to Australia with her parents, 12 brothers and sisters and sister-in-law before the First World War. That pittance in rent refers to her Housing Commission flat in Mount Pritchard near Sydney, and by “the club”, she means the 'Senior Citizens' Club' in Liverpool. The women's magazine "Women's Weekly" has 'discovered' the sociable Maria Tonkin-Van Santen and has published a very nice story about her and the other Van Santen's with photos from the family album. It is good for post-war immigrants, with their aftercare, English language lessons and their endless talk about social services, to read how immigrants from those “good old days” fared. The story does not mention why the large Van Santen family decided in the year of our Lord 1909 to exchange the spacious house cum milk parlour near The Hague for an uncertain existence in Australia, which was then completely unknown in Europe. But that is less important too. For the post-war immigrants who talk about the poor and insufficient information before their departure: before their departure, the village pastor warned that all Van Santen girls would now marry black guys...

Teased

Four of the older sons of the large, close-knit family went first. Of course, at their own expense because people had certainly not heard of subsidised migration at that time. Wilhelm, Hendrik, Bernhard, and Adriaan landed in Sydney without any knowledge of the English language and immediately moved into the country, where they started working for small farmers near Lismore. Johannes and Jacobus, with his wife Katrina, followed to join the boys in Lismore, and the whole lot went to work at Ryan's Hotel - the men in the stables, carriages and fields, and Katrina in the hotel. This way, they could save a lot to bring the rest of the family over. So, father and mother Van Santen went on board in Antwerp with the younger children and enormous piles of chests and trunks. Maria, who was only 12 years old at the time, naturally thought the trip was a fantastic adventure. The boys and Katrina, who had left earlier, stood at Circular Quay, and brought the rest of the family to the large house in Leichhardt, near downtown Sydney. The men got work in factories and on the docks, the older girls went to work in shops, and the little ones, including Maria, went to school. Apparently, not much has changed since 1909 in the field of assimilation or integration of children who do not speak English yet. They were teased quite a bit, and unfortunately, even then the voice was still heard: 'Why don't you go back to your own country'.

“Iceberg”

However, the Van Santen's just laughed about it, minded their own business, and moved forward. The house in Leichhardt would soon be exchanged for a large home in Pendle Hill, where, despite the necessary marriages, the Van Santens continued to live together in their own homes for years. The only one who left Australia was the now 81-year-old Bernhard, who went to fight with 1st AIF in France, married a French girl and now lives in Cannes, where he still cycles as far as Monaco. With sister Annie and brother Bill - Wilhelm - who both lived in Bondi, Maria Tonkin - Van Santen, who has been a widow for many years, still regularly plays cards. Brother Wilhelm, who certainly no longer belongs to the youth, is a so-called 'iceberg' - the tough guys who splash around in the surf summer and winter. A few days a week, Maria goes to Sydney to visit the other surviving 6 brothers and sisters, and cousins, but her real world is in Mt. Pritchard. In the 'Senior Citizens' Club,' she plays carpet bowls and other games, speaks at meetings, and enjoys the trips the club organises for the elderly. Last year it was Adelaide and later the snow of Thredbo in the Snowy Mountains. In her apartment, she grows the most beautiful plants and she indeed looks like someone who enjoys life to the fullest and who stands firmly in today's world. On the table are the real Dutch biscuit tin and the glass vase that she received from her mother. A piece of the Netherlands from the past in the Australia of today...

Transcription	Emigratie in 1909 “Why don't you go back” 'Wij betalen maar een schijntje huur, zodat wij genoeg van ons ouderdomspensioen overhouden om er goed van te eten en naar de club te gaan . . .' Zij werden behoorlijk geplaagd en reeds toen klonk het helaas nog steeds gehoorde: 'Why don't you go back tot your own country'.
