Tekort woonruimte grootste bezwaar SYDNEY NSW - Volgens een onderzoek van het 'Australian Public Opinion Polls', gepubliceerd in het Sydney dagblad 'The Sun', is het aantal Australiers dat tenminste voortzetting van de huidige stroom immigran ten 'wenst thans in de meerderheid, terwijl het een jaar geleden nog in de minderheid was. Slechts 42 pctr van de ondervraagden wenst thans nog vermindering van de huidige immigratie stroom, terwijl een jaar geleden nog 52 procent zulks wenste.

Opmerkelijk is, dat rond 60 procent van de ondervraagden mannen voortzetting of uitbreiding van de huidige stroom wenst tegen over slechts 46 procent van de ondervraagde vrouwen. Politiek Onder de aanhangers van de Liberal Party en de Country Party is men over wegend voor handhaving of toename van de immigranten stroom. terwijl onder de Labor Party aanhangers het aantal dat vermindering van de immigratie wenst nog steeds de meerderheid heeft. De voornaamste redenen welke men opgeeft voor vermindering van de immigratie stroom zijn 'niet genoeg woningen', 'nog te veel werklozen' en 'niet genoeg immigranten van het juiste slag'.
