CANBERRA - The Department of Immigration and Ethnic Affairs has compiled a study on the Dutch population in Australia based on data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, which was collected through the general Census in 1981.
The information provided in a brochure was compiled by a group of university students employed by the Department under the ‘Vacation Students Scheme 1982/1983’.
The information concerns people who were born in the Netherlands, where most of them live, how old they are, how long they have lived in Australia, how many of them have taken the Australian nationality, whether they speak a language other than English at home, how well they speak English, and what religion they practice.
There is also data on what qualifications they have acquired since leaving school, how many are in the labour market, what kind of work they do, and what their income is.
96,044 people in Australia were born in the Netherlands. Nearly 66% of them live in the 12 cities surveyed. The largest Dutch population groups were found in Melbourne (19%) and Sydney (15%), with 18,430 and 14,423 Dutch people respectively. For the other cities, the number of people born in the Netherlands is: Newcastle 898, Wollongong 2,019, Geelong 1,910, Brisbane 6,310, Gold Coast 955, Adelaide 7,560, Perth 9,829, Hobart 560, Darwin 356 and Canberra 1,702.
3,3992 Dutch people live in the rest of Australia. While almost 4% are under 29 years old, 20% are over 55. The largest group (72%) in Australia is over 22 years old. Just over 4% have been here for less than 3 years. Of those who have been here for more than 3 years, 77% have taken Australian nationality. Of those who were Australians (?) and 9 years old in 1981, 30% had Australian nationality. Of those who were Australian citizens in 1981, the largest group (82%) had lived in Australia for more than 22 years.
Of the 5 to 14-year-olds, 62% speak Dutch at home. Of those aged 15 and over, 49% speak Dutch at home. While just over 7% of 5–14-year-olds do not speak English well or at all, only just under 2% of over 15-year-olds fall into these categories. Nearly 62% declared themselves Christians.
Of those aged 15 and over, 1% are still at school, and 34% have a vocational diploma or other qualification. The majority of men with a degree have a business degree, while most women with a degree have another degree.
At the time of the Census, 63% participated in the labour market. More than 40% of married women and 43% of unmarried women worked.
The unemployment rate among Dutch-born people is 5%. Just over 34% of employed people are tradesmen, factory workers and employees. Most male employees fall into this group (44%).
Just over 27% of women work in offices. The largest group (20) of people with jobs work in factories; 18% work in the purchasing and sales trade. Most men work in factories, purchasing and sales, and construction. Most women work in social services and sales. While 31% of men earn between $12,000 and $18,000, most women (32%) fall into the $1,000 to $4,000 salary bracket.
Just over 26% of women have no income, compared to less than 3% of men, while 10% of men and just over 1% of women earn more than $18,000.

CANBERRA — Het 'Department of Immigration and Ethnic Affairs' heeft aan de hand van gegevens van het Australisch Bureau voor Statistieken, welke werden verzameld door middel van de algemene volkstelling in 1981, een studie onderzoek samengesteld over de Nederlandse bevolkingsgroep in Australie.
De in een brochure verstrekte, informatie werd bijeengebracht door een groep universiteitsstudenten die door het Department in dienst waren genomen in het kader van het 'Vacation Students Scheme 1982/1983’.
De informatie betreft mensen, die in Nederland zijn geboren, waar de meesten van hen wonen, hoe oud zij zijn, hoelang zij al in Australie wonen, hoevelen van hen de Australische nationaliteit hebben aangenomen, of zij een andere taal dan het Engels spreken thuis, hoe goed zij het Engels beheersen, en welke godsdienst zij belijden.
Ook zijn er gegevens over welke kwalificaties zij hebben verworven sinds zij de school verlieten, hoevelen werkzaam zijn op de arbeidsmarkt, wat voor werk zij doen, en wat hun inkomen is.
Er zijn in Australie 96.044 mensen, die in Nederland zijn geboren. Bijna 66% van hen woont in de 12 onderzochte steden. De grootste Nederlandse bevolkingsgroepen werden aangetroffen in Melbourne (19%) en in Sydney (15%) met respectievelijk 18.430 en 14.423 Nederlanders. Voor de overige steden is het aantal personen, dat in Nederland is geboren: Newcastle 898, Wollongong 2.019, Geelong 1.910, Brisbane 6.310, Gold Coast 955, Adelaide 7.560, Perth 9.829, Hobart 560, Darwin 356 en Canberra 1.702.
In de rest van Australië wonen 3.3992 Nederlanders. Terwijl bijna 4% jonger is dan 29 jaar, is 20% boven de 55. De grootste groep (72%) is meer dan 22 jaar hier in Australie. Iets over 4% is hier korter dan 3 jaar. Van degenen, die hier langer dan 3 jaar zijn, heeft 77% de Australische nationaliteit aangenomen. Van degenen, die in 1981 Aus (?) en 9 jaar zijn, heeft 30% de Australische nationaliteit. Van degenen, die in 1981 Australisch burger waren, woonde de grootste groep (82%) meer dan 22 jaar in Australie.
Van de 5- tot 14-jarigen spreekt 62% Nederlands thuis. Van de 15 jaar en ouder spreekt 49% thuis Nederlands. Terwijl iets over 7% van de 5-14 jarigen niet goed Engels spreekt of helemaal geen Engels, valt slechts iets onder 2% van de over 15 jaar in deze categorieën Bijna 62% verklaarde christen te zijn.
Van de 15 jaar en ouder is 1% nog op school en 34% heeft een vakdiploma of een andere kwalificatie. Het grootste deel van de mannen met een diploma heeft een handelsdiploma, terwijl de meeste vrouwen met een diploma een ander diploma hebben.
Ten tijde van de Volkstelling nam 63% deel aan de arbeidsmarkt. Meer dan 40% van de getrouwde vrouwen werkte en 43% van de ongetrouwde vrouwen.
Het werkloosheidspercentage onder de in Nederland geborenen is 5%. Iets meer dan 34% van de mensen met een baan zijn handelslieden, fabrieksarbeiders en werknemers. Het grootste deel van de mannelijke werknemers valt in deze groep (44%).
Iets meer dan 27% van de vrouwen werken op kantoren. De grootste groep (20) van mensen met een baan is werkzaam in fabrieken; een verdere 18% werkt in de in-en verkoopshandel. De meeste mannen werken in fabrieken, in-en verkoop en in de bouw. De meeste vrouwen werken in sociale diensten en in en verkoop. Terwijl 31% van de mannen tussen $12,000 en $18,000 verdient, vallen de meeste vrouwen (32%) in de $1,000 tot $4,000 inkomensgroep.
Iets meer dan 26% van de vrouwen heeft geen inkomen, vergeleken met minder dan 3% van de mannen, terwijl 10% van de mannen en iets meer dan 1% van de vrouwen meer dan $18.000 verdient. |
