THE NEWCOMER AND THE LEGISLATION
Τhe Australian legislation aims at the fair treatment of both citizens and residents.
It is based on the English legislation, which, along with Roman legislation, is one of the great legal systems passes on to the modern world.
The Australian law consists of the "common law" and the "equality law" which is shaped by decisions of judges of the High Courts of England and Australia, laws passed by the Federal Parliament and State Parliaments and public authorities.
Many migrants - particularly from non-English speaking countries - know little or nothing about how the law can help and protect them in Australia. This booklet tries to give a simple interpretation of the law to newcomers - and to explain their rights.
Common legal terms used in this booklet are written in capital letters and their meaning is given in a special list on page 21.

Η Αυστραλιανή νομοθεσία, αποβλέπει στην δίκαιη μεταχείριση, τόσο των πολιτών όσο και των μετοίκων.
Στηρίζεται στη Αγγλική νομοθεσία, η οποία μαζί με την Ρωμαϊκή, είναι ένα από τα μεγάλα νομικά συστήματα που κληροδοτήθηκαν στο σύγχρονο κόσμο.
Η Αυστραλιανή νομοθεσία αποτελείται από το "κοινό δίκαιο" και το "δίκαιο της ισότητος" που διαμορφώνεται από αποφάσεις δικαστών των ανωτέρων δικαστηρίων της Αγγλίας και Αυστραλίας, από νόμους που εψηφίστηκαν από το Ομοσπονδιακό Κοινοβούλιο και Κοινοβούλια των Πολιτειών και των δημοσίων αρχών.
Πολλοί μετανάστες - ιδίως από χώρες στις οποίες δεν ομιλείται η Αγγλική - γνωρίζουν λίγα ή τίποτα για τον τρόπο με τον οποίο μπορεί ο νόμος να τους συνδράμει και να τους προστατεύσει στην Αυστραλία.
Το βιβλιαράκι αυτό προσπαθεί να δώσει μια απλή ερμηνεία της νομοθεσίας στους νεοερχομένους - και να τους εξηγήσει τα δικαιώματα τους.
