Excerpts from my memoirs.
The Kalymnos Sponge Association was founded in 1949 with all surface crews and divers as members. Nikolaos Saroukos served as president alongside Al. Alexiou. Unfortunately, at the end of the first term of the association, the divers withdrew and formed a separate association with Emmanuel Maglis as president, retaining the name of the original association.
This development didn't come as a surprise, as the diver's payment structure differed from that of the surface crew. It was then my turn to suggest the establishment of a new union, encompassing all surface crew members—captains without property, internal combustion engineers, and all sponge crew members, including clouserids, trehandinieris, sailors, and boatmen—under the name "Kalymnos Sailors' Union." The union was headquartered above the Emmanuel Tiliakou cafe. The union's existence spanned from 1950 to 1954 when I departed for Australia. During my tenure as president, I applied for membership in the Panhellenic Union of Sailors, Motorships, Diesel Engines, and Sailors, believing it would facilitate the advancement of our sailors into the merchant marine. This was accomplished in 1952, and I was appointed Regional Department Head of the Dodecanese headquarters in Kalymnos for the association. During this period, I also submitted an application to the Ministry of Merchant Marine for the extension of medical services to sailors' homes. On our island, where there were 1500 families, we were not only deprived of penicillin but also aspirin, privileges reserved for those residing in Piraeus.
The government's (EPEK) involvement at the time, with Nicol as Prime Minister, greatly contributed to the success of our medical endeavors. Manolis Kapelas, EPEK's representative on our island, provided significant assistance alongside Plastira.
While awaiting a response to our requests, I penned an open letter to Mr. Kalamida, "the Malamida" (a copy of which was published in the newspapers Rodiaki - Proodos Rhodes and Athenaiki Athens), urging then Prime Minister Marshal Pappagas to take heed. By early September 1954, I received a message from the then Mayor and my classmate Antonios Mavrikokis, summoning me to the mayoral office due to incoming visitors. Upon arrival, I noticed everyone was on edge, ready to convene the council. I spotted a naval captain and two officers, and Mr. Mavrikokis rose to address them, granting them the floor.

Ο Σύλλογος Σπογγαλιέων Καλύμνου ιδρύθηκε το 1949 με μέλη του συλλόγου να αποτελούνται από όλα τα πληρώματα επιφάνειας και δύτες, με πρόεδρο τον Νικόλαο Σαρούκο και γενικό γραμματέα τον Αλ. Αλεξίου. Δυστυχώς, στο τέλος της πρώτης θητείας του συλλόγου, οι δύτες αποχώρησαν και ίδρυσαν ξεχωριστό σωματείο με πρόεδρο τον Εμμανουήλ Μαγκλή και με την ονομασία του πρώτου συλλόγου.
Αυτό δεν μας εξέπληξε καθώς ήταν αναμενόμενο λόγω της διαφορετικής αμοιβής των δυτών σε σχέση με τους επιφανειακούς. Ήταν λοιπόν φυσικό να προτείνω τη λειτουργία ενός νέου σωματείου με μέλη όλα τα πληρώματα επιφάνειας, δηλαδή κυβερνήτες χωρίς περιουσία, μηχανικούς εσωτερικής καύσης και όλα τα μέλη των πληρωμάτων σπογγαλιέρων, συμπεριλαμβανομένων κλουσεριδών, τρεχαντηνιέρων, ναυτών και ναυτοπαίδων, με την ονομασία "Ένωση Ναυτικών Καλύμνου". Το σωματείο στεγαζόταν πάνω από το καφενείο του Εμμανουήλ Τηλιάκου. Η ζωή του συλλόγου διήρκεσε από το 1950 έως το 1954, όταν και αναχώρησα για την Αυστραλία. Κατά τη διάρκεια της προεδρίας μου, υπέβαλα αίτηση για ένταξη στη Πανελλήνια Ένωση Ιστιοφόρων, Μηχανοκινητήρων, Πετρελαιοκινητήρων και Ναυτών, πιστεύοντας ότι με αυτόν τον τρόπο θα προωθούσαμε ευκολότερα τους ναυτικούς μας στο εμπορικό ναυτικό. Αυτό πραγματοποιήθηκε το 1952, και με διόρισαν Τμηματάρχη Περιφέρειας στη Δωδεκάνησο με έδρα την Κάλυμνο. Κατά τη διάρκεια αυτής της περιόδου, υπέβαλα αίτηση στο Υπουργείο Εμπορικής Ναυτιλίας για την επέκταση των ιατροφαρμακευτικών υπηρεσιών στα ναυτικά σπίτια. Στο νησί μας, όπου υπήρχαν 1500 οικογένειες, μας έλειπαν όχι μόνο η πενικιλίνη, αλλά και η ασπιρίνη, προνόμια που είχαν μόνο οι κάτοικοι του Πειραιά.
Η συμμετοχή της τότε κυβέρνησης (ΕΠΕΚ), με τον Νικόλα ως πρωθυπουργό, στην παραπάνω επιτυχία της ιατροφαρμακευτικής υπηρεσίας ήταν σημαντική. Μεγάλη βοήθεια παρείχε επίσης ο Μανώλης Καπελάς, εκπρόσωπος της ΕΠΕΚ στο νησί μας, μαζί με τον Πλαστήρα.
Περιμένοντας μια απάντηση στο αίτημά μας, έγραψα ανοιχτή επιστολή στον κ. Καλαμίδα, "τη Μαλαμίδα" (ένα αντίγραφο της επιστολής δημοσιεύτηκε στις εφημερίδες Ροδιακή - Πρόοδος της Ρόδου και Αθηναϊκή της Αθήνας), παροτρύνοντας τον τότε πρωθυπουργό Στρατάρχη Πάπαγα να λάβει υπόψη του το θέμα. Μέχρι τις αρχές Σεπτεμβρίου 1954 δεν λάβαμε απάντηση, όταν και λαμβάνω ένα μήνυμα από τον τότε Δήμαρχο και συμμαθητή μου Αντώνιο Μαυρικόκη να παρευρεθώ στο δημαρχείο λόγω επισκέψεων. Κατά την άφιξή μου, παρατήρησα ότι όλοι ήταν σε εγρήγορση, έτοιμοι να συνέλθουν στο συμβούλιο. Αντίκρυσα έναν πλωτάρχη και δύο αξιωματικούς, ενώ ο κ. Μαυρικόκης πήρε τον λόγο και παρέδωσε τον λόγο στους αξιωματικούς. |
