Abstract

Greek immigration charter 1920 - 1970 - Βroken Hill, NSW - Collection includes an album of yearly archived photographs, a manuscript (unnamed) describing the immigration movement in the area of Broken Hill from 1920-1970, demographics, list of the names of the Greek workers, the jobs available, and information about the Greek community of the area.

"Greek immigrants arrived in Broken Hill in from the year 1920 οnwards, Greeks had arrived from all parts of Greece, most of whom worked in the mines, copper, lead, silver and gold. Many Greeks arrived in Broken Hill, after the war, 1948-1950, until the end of 1970. In 1950-1970 there were about 60 families in Broken Hill, today our parish consists of 10-15 families. After the year 1980, many immigrants left for other states, Sydney, Adelaide and Melbourne. During the first years, the Greeks worked in the mines, they were around 600-700 people. The population of Broken Hill was once about 30 thousand people, and it had about 80 hotels, today it has about 24 hotels and 5 clubs. Most Greeks worked in the water supplies gas co, and others owned fish shops, milk bars, and fruit shops. In the year 1930, the first Greek Presidential Association of Greeks was founded under the name "Omonoia" with a five-member committee of Ioannis Gavrilis, Nikolaos Karanikoulos, Georgios Beis, Nikolaos Papas, and Georgios Panagos. In the year 1952-1953, the building, the Hellenic Hall, was purchased, which we used for meetings, dances, as well as screenings of Greek films and picnics. In the year 1958, the community building caught a fire and got burned down, and with the help of all immigrants and members, the new community building was built, with a lot of personal work, donations and a loan from the bank. "

Transcription	"Έλληνες μετανάστες έφτασαν στο Βroken Hil το έτος του 1920 και εντεύθεν, Έλληνες είχαν αφιχθή από όλα τα μέρη της Ελλάδος, οι οποίοι οι περισσότεροι εργαζόντουσαν στις mines, στα μεταλλορυχεία, copper, lead, silver and gold. Πολλοί Έλληνες έφτασαν στο Βroken Hill, μετά τον πόλεμο, 1948-1950, μέχρι το τέλος του 1970. Το 1950-1970 υπήρξαν στο Βroken Hill κάπου 60 οικογένειες, σήμερα η παροικία μας αποτελείται από 10-15 οικογένειες. Μετά από το έτος 1980, πολλοί ομογενείς έφυγαν για άλλες πολιτείες, Sydney, Adelaide και Μelbourne. Kάποτε κατά τα πρώτα χρόνια, οι μετανάστες δούλευαν στις mines κάπου 600-700 άτομα. Το έτος 1952-1953 αγοράσθηκε το κτίριο, η Ελληνική Αίθουσα, που το χρησιμοποιούσαμε για συγκεντρώσεςι meetings, χορούς, καθώς και προβολές με ελληνικά films και picnics.
