French

France was a competing power with Britain for colonial control in the Pacific, and French explorers left detailed records of Australia at the time of white settlement. French-speakers were included in the colonies that made up Australia from their beginning. The State Library of New South Wales (SLNSW) has extensive French-language collections of newspapers, diaries, family papers, and early maps. The National Archives of Australia (NAA) has a broad collection of materials in the French language, for instance, related to the Red Cross and Australia and its treatment of migrants.
