This collection comprises seven lettergrams written by Capitano Maggiore (‘Captain Major’) Almerino Albertin during his internment at Cowra Prisoner of War Camp, New South Wales, 1942-1946. The lettergrams are written in Italian and addressed to Albertin’s wife and other family members in Padua, Italy. Also included is a Christmas message from Albertin to his family, written on the letterhead of the Apostolic Delegation in Australia (1942). All of Albertin’s correspondence contains a ‘Passed by Censor’ stamp and/or an ‘Approved for transmission by camp commandant’ stamp; the lettergram dated 22 May 1944 includes content redacted in black. There is also a typescript letter from the International Committee of the Red Cross (‘Comité International de la Croix-Rouge. Agence centrale des prisonniers de guerre’) addressed to Albertin’s father, regarding a photograph taken of Albertin at Cowra (photograph not included in this collection), 1944.
