Abstract
Newpaper article on the unfavourable working conditions in Australia
Translation
AUSTRALIA. The latest reports about this colony are very unfavourable. In particular, the workers were in a precarious condition, owing to lack of work, the fall in wages, and the costly foodstuff.
A letter written by a miner to his family in Belgium confirms these sad tidings and speaks of the unfavourable outcome of the prospectors’ work.
Therefore, with hardships of all kinds, the changeable weather and the suffering of a wandering life, the miners cannot hope their wages will be more than 12 to 14 sch. daily; a reward which is wholly disproportionate to the high price of the primary foodstuff.
The letter of which we spoke adds: The poorest employment in Europe is still preferable to that which the resources of this country offer. Therefore, most emigrants, as soon as they have managed to collect some money, return to Europe or go to America or other regions to see if a better fortune can be made there.
These communications, true and well-founded, appear to us to be of such a nature as to enlighten and warn those who, by idle hopes or by the allurements of deceptive opportunities, would be inclined to move to Australia cautiously. (Indep. Belge)

AUSTRALIE.
