1.0 cm., Original ms. Bericht uber die Reise nach Australien 1888 [International Exhibition in Melbourne, Australia 1888]: manuscript, 1889. An original unpublished bound manuscript (57 pages) by Professor Ernst Muller about his visit to the International Exhibition in held in Melbourne in1888. The manuscript is written on 15th July 1889 in Hannover, not translated. The account begins with an overview of the routes taken by the streamships of the Norddeutscher Lloyd. The account proper begins with a description of a visit to the Ballarat and Bendigo goldfields. The report on the Exhibition includes a table comparing the size and number of exhibitors at the World Exhibitions since 1837. The notes continue on the railways in Australia and a comparative table railway networks throughout out the world. This is followed by sections on agriculture, coal mining in the Newcastle area, Australian timbers (with a mention of Fedinand von Mueller’s work), coaching building and shipyards. Ernst describes the exhibits of England, America, Canada, Austria and Germany (page 24). His account concludes with a detailed eleven page description of Australian wool, sheep shearing and the textile industry and the potential market for German sewing machines. The original drawing on a tipped in card shows the layout of an Australian sheep shearing shed. |
