Description from source |
1.0 cm.; English translations are provided with the documents. Eight letters by Louis de Saulces de Freycinet, the first to Louis Marie Bajot, Head of the Law Office at the Ministry and Inspector General of Naval and Colonial Libraries in France; six letters to Freycinet’s cousin Jenny de Montlovier and one to an unidentified aunt (18 October 1833). The correspondence in this collection, covering the years 1832-1839, is written after the death of Freycinet’s wife Rose, and concerns mostly family and business matters. There are several references to a mill which Freycinet owned: the difficulty of water supply, maintenance of the fabric and problems with the tenants. One of the letters (27 September 1832) contains a brief and completely negative allusion to his early naval career and the Baudin expedition, as well as a reminiscence of his marriage to Rose and his continuing grief at her loss. The collection also contains a brief biographical resume of Freycinet’s life. |
