Description from source |
Digital order no: Album ID : 1122754 1 volume The first record of the expedition was the journal, which Rose wrote expressly for her dear friend Caroline de Nanteuil (and does not seem intended for publication). The journal comprises three small volumes with original notebook wrappers bound as one . Each is numbered individually at the top left hand side of each page. It is written in ink in Rose’s own hand on 132 pages (46, 44, 42 pages), with 18 of them left blank. A total of about 40,000 words were written over four years. Rose records the events of the voyage, from her boarding the Uranie and the departure of the expedition from Toulon, through stops at Gibraltar, Teneriffe, Rio de Janeiro, the Cape, Mauritius and Bourbon, Shark Bay in Western Australia, then the journey to Coupang (Kupang) in western Timor. The journal entry ceases for awhile, from 23 October 1818 when the Uranie left Timor until the 18 November 1819 when she entered Port Jackson. This is the period that the Uranie visits the Moluccas, the Caroline Islands, the Marianas and the Sandwich Islands. It then begins again when the expedition arrived in Port Jackson from the 18 November 1819. Rose describes her experiences in Sydney and Parramatta, the return journey passing New Zealand to the Falklands where the ship was wrecked. It describes the various negotiations and finally the acquisition of the rescue vessel which takes them to Montevideo, Rio de Janeiro, and ultimately the return to France. |
