Ernst and Edith Heller Collection

Abstract

The collection of Austrian Jewish refugees Ernst and Edith Heller who arrived in Melbourne from Vienna, via Naples, in 1939. Family correspondence with English translations from relatives in Vienna, Berkley, California, Los Angeles, Sao Paulo, Brazil, Budapest and Tel Aviv. There are 2 diaries one of which is Ernst’s 1918 war diary detailing his service in Italy, both have English translations. Also included are photographs of the Austrian Tirol and Vienna, many photographs of unidentified people, photographs of Edith Heller and family photographs for both Edith and Ernst. Red Cross tracing service documents for Heinrich and Alice Spitzer transported from Vienna to the Riga Ghetto in 1942. The collection includes a Jewish passport for both Edith and Ernst Heller and Ernst’s 1939 Jewish identity card. Also included are Edith’s musical study testimonies and a student handbook as well as Viennese theatre programs. Australian documentation includes Ernst’s work references and a memorial essay about Edith. Also included is a family history.
