Description From Source1 folder Propaganda leaflets issued by the Far Eastern Liason Office (FELO) in Bouganville during the Second World War. The leaflets, written in English, Japanese, and Pidgeon were dropped over parts of Papua New Guinea in a bid to reduce the morale of the Japanese and to stop the local Papuans from assisting them. The collection also includes a confidential report by Captain Russell, Officer in Charge, FELO, Bougainville titled ‘FELO propaganda campaign on Bougainville’ 20 August 1945, to which is attached a leaflet in Japanese advising that Japan had surrendered and the war had ended, with a translation; and another which was dropped in combat areas after news of the surrender, addressed to ‘Japanese soldiers on Bougainville’ advising that Japan had agreed to the Allied terms for peace and that all hostilities would cease; with a translation; signed by Lieutenant General Stanley George Savige, Commander, 2nd Australian Corps.
