5.5 cm., Original ms in bound vols, typescript, clipping, diagram. Reminiscences of Charles Eberle, from his departure from London in 1854 to his arrival in his native Switzerland in 1864. The narrative, written in French, consists of the following sections: vol 1 – London to Melbourne, At Melbourne and departure for the mines, the gold mines; my first work, Ballarat. Vol 2 – Establishment at Ballarat and mine, return to the mines, my pastimes at Ballarat, Mt Ararat. Vol 3 – In New Zealand, forest work and departure from New Zealand, New South Wales, Across the plains. Vol 4 – The Ovens, return to the mines of South Chiltern, Wahgunyah and Rutherglen. Vol 5 – Sojourn and work at the Union Co Skelton Gully and departure from Australia, glance at Australia, from Melbourne to Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro to Livepool and Switzerland. Typed translations in English are also included, ca.1963. Charles Eberle went back to his native Swizerland after this trip and got married. He returned to Australia in about 1887 and started a bakery business in Warragul, Victoria in 1890. |
