1 wallet: 2cm Collection relating to the Second World War service of 023893 Leading Seaman Jan Sigvard van Os who served in the Netherlands East Indies (NEI) as a crew member on Royal Netherlands Navy (RNN) flying boars and small craft. He was selected for evacuation to Australia with other RNN personal in March 1942. Unfortunately, his ship, the KPM steamer Duymaer Van Twist, was intercepted by Japanese cruisers two days out of Tjilatjap, and all the Dutch servicemen aboard became prisoners of war. Jan van Os survived captivity at the Makassar Camp in the Celebes and he settled in Australia after the war. Collection consists of: a diary written in Dutch by van Os between 1942 – 1945 with an English translation which includes a short memoir by van Os; a typed nominal roll in Dutch, a notebook with drawings inserted; Certificate of naturalization; Ministerie van marine in Dutch; 2 birth certificates; 2 letters from Japanese soldiers in English; a copy of Makassar Nieuws 6 October 1945; a telegram from the Japanese written in Dutch; reference in English from the Royal Netherlands Navy; a Dutch Map of Surabaya, Indonesia. |
