Description from source |
Overall: 329 × 202 mm These 15 typewritten pages in German outline the voyage of Heinz and Gisela Bernhard by ship and train from Berlin to Australia in 1938. Even though the Bernhards call their voyage “our honeymoon”, they are using this opportunity to flee from Nazi Germany and to permanently emigrate to Australia The Bernhards travel on the Empress from London to Canada, describing it as a luxury travel with all amenities and a rich cultural life on board, cross Canada by train, and then board the Niagara to Australia, describing this part as a disappointing, challenging journey that was only made bearable because of a strong community of travellers working together. The report also talks about searching for a home and for work in Sydney and is clearly meant to contain many suggestions for others who wanted to flee from Germany to Australia. |
