Abstract

A Spanish cover notebook which includes Greek handwritten notes on meetings of Greek navy officers in 1947 During the first meeting members include: Livanos Μ – dokoumanis (ντοκουμάνης) Dokoumanis (from the English Donkey man). In the steamships it was the chief heater (from the steam donkey or donkey engine where the steam dinghy – with its own steam engine or not – was the hipparion) and when the steam died, the engine’s tailgate where such was needed. Petousis Th, – kamarotos (καμαρώτος) The kamarotos arranges, cleans and airs the ship’s cabins every day. He changes and lays the sheets, cleans and disinfects the bathroom. Furthermore, it ensures the provision of all the necessary consumables for the cabin, depending on its type (a’ or b’ category) Τsiropinas N. – lostromos (λοστρόμος) The head of a ship’s junior crew, one who oversees all necessary work. Βοzikis G. – thermastis (θερμαστής) The thermastis (steam engine, stoker) belongs to the lower “engine crew” of the ship. He is the one in charge of lighting the steam boiler and monitoring it Chaviaras S – sailor Topics covered: report and replacement of the unqualified staff, critic of the crew’s mistakes, lack of a radio device, types of payment, personal issues among the crew, women to be prohibited in the boat, maintenance of the cabins. Notes discontinue and the navy crew of Rigos, Hatzigeorgiou, Deligianni, Vrachnos, Liadis, Stylianidis, and Tziotis take over on 11/3/1951. They discuss about a charity dance among navy officers taking place in Atlas Greek centre in Sydney, and amount of money raised. Notes also include a list of Greek books (many on socialism / communism) which got sent to Brisbane, and Melbourne
