Αίτηση κατά της απέλασης δύο Ελλήνων ναυτικών – Petition against the deportation of two Greek seamen
Abstract
It was not uncommon for Greek seamen to jump off commercial boats in Australia for better opportunities, particularly during the war years, the dictatorship, and the aftermaths, which left extreme hardships for Greeks.
Some of them managed to hide well inside other Greeks’ houses until their boat departed, while others would marry another Greek within 24 hours to get naturalized. Some would get caught by the captain or the police and deported.
This petition possibly refers to one of these cases, where the community of Whyalla collected 1200 signatures against the deportation of two Greek seamen. The document is not dated, and there is no further information on the names or the origin of these two Greek seamen.
