Some of J. H. Scheltema’s letters are in English, but the majority are written in Dutch. J.H. Scheltema moved to Australia in 1888, where he specialised as a landscape painter, particularly noted for his inclusion of livestock in his works.

The collection consists of over 800 letters, including a few postcards from Jan Hendrik Scheltema (most of them written in Dutch, Scheltema a Dutch painter who spent over 40 years of his life in Australia), sent home to his father Nicholaas Scheltema, and older sister Anne Scheltema, to Gouda and later to Schiedam, Holland.
Most of the letters are from Australia but include from a number of other countries where he briefly worked, and often include pencil sketches by Scheltema himself, and also newspaper cuttings of articles relating to social life and events in Victoria, Australia. Some of J. H. Scheltema’s letters are in English. There are letters written to Anne Scheltema from Edie Scheltema-Smith, and Nick Scheltema (J. H. Scheltema’s wife and son). The letters were found with the death of the widow of the late Dr Casimir Jeekel, Scheltema’s grand-nephew. The letters provide detailed descriptions of life in Australia from 1888-1940, Scheltema’s working life and connections as an artist, and his broader interests. It also includes English translations and digital content. There are photographs of Edie and son Nick, a photo of J. H. Scheltema with his cat, also 10 original photographs of Scheltema family, and 5 negatives. It also includes a folded sketchbook and a handmade “Atlas” belonging to J. H. Scheltema, a copy of marriage certificate of his parents, 1850, and an extract of death entry of Scheltema, 1973.
In additional to the letters sent by Scheltema, there is a group of 15 letters that consist of family correspondence by or to members of the Scheltema family, circa 1868-1894, discussing the artist and his work; and an original drawing by J. H. Scheltema (circa 1871). Alongside the original manuscript material, the collection contains digital content, which includes scans of typescript transcripts of letters transcribed by Dr Casimir Jeekel, also translations of the transcripts by Peter Reynders including extensive biographical details, footnotes, and images of Scheltema, as well as transcript and translation of an illustration of a knife sharpening machine designed by Scheltema circa 1871.
