The article notes
“BAPTISING baby Thomas Wong in the Presbyterian faith is Sydney’s only Chinese pastor, Rev. Lo Shui Kwong. His
church is in the heart of Sydney’s Chinatown, where it has stood since 1893. But it is little known to Sydney people for it is now almost hidden by restaurants and provision stores. Founded by the Foreign Missions Committee of the Presbyterian Church of Australia in 1869, on the Araluen (NSW) goldfields, the church was transferred to Sydney 24
years later as the Chinese gradually left the goldfields. Since 1893 the little church has had five successive Chinese pastors. They were brought from China to work among Sydney Chinese under the Sydney Presbytery and the Presbyterian Missions Committee. Reverend Lo Shui Kwong arrived in Sydney in 1942. He brought his wife and family of three children with him. There was much work for him to do because a vacancy had existed for some time, which had not been filled earlier owing to wartime travel restrictions.”
“In addition to his normal duties as Pastor, Rev. Lo Shui Kwong has organised a school of Chinese, where he teaches the Cantonese dialect to Australians and Australian-born Chinese. Originally for Chinese only, the school was welcomed so enthusiastically by Australians that Mr. Lo made his classes available for everyone.”
