Description From Source Full title: Carte reduite de la Mer du Sud : pour servir a l’Histoire generale des voyages / par M. Bellin Ingr. de la marine, et de la Societe Roye. de Londres. 1 map ; plate dimensions 20.5 x 35.5 cm, on sheet 26 x 38 cm. “Tome XI No. 9”–Lower right. From: Prevost d’exiles, Antoine Francois. Histoire generale des voyages … Paris, Chez Didot, 1746-1761. Vol 11. Prime meridian: Isle de Fer. Map of the Pacific Ocean. Australia is attached to New Guinea and Tasmania attached to the mainland. The east coast is entirely imaginary. New Zealand includes only its western coast in an incomplete fashion. This map is remarkable in its historical significance, timed only a few years before the commencement of an intense campaign by the English and the French to explore and map Oceania and the South Pacific.
