Short description
Diplomat and author. Hugh Gilchrist was born in Sydney in 1916, and graduated in arts and laws from Sydney University. Following military service in the Second World War, Gilchrist entered the Department of External Affairs and served in Canberra, London, Berlin, Paris, Jakarta and South Africa. He was posted to Greece in 1949 as a member of the UN Special Commission on the Balkans. Subsequently, he was Australia’s High Commissioner in Tanzania, Ambassador to Greece in 1968-1972, head of the Legal Division of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Ambassador to Spain. In retirement, Gilchrist served on the Australia Council’s Literature Board and as a consultant to the Department of Foreign Affairs. He also undertook historical research and was the author of the three-volume work, Australians and Greeks (1992-1997). Gilchrist died in Canberra in 2010.
