Summary:
The bulk of the papers in MS 4931 comprise correspondence, 1969-1987, relating to Greek-Australian relations. There are personal diaries and various official despatches, 1958-1972, of Gilchrist in his positions as Australian Ambassador to Greece and Spain and as Acting High Commissioner in South Africa; minutes of the Australia Council Literary Board, 1979-1982, and typescripts of writings by Gilchrist on Greek-Australian relations (10 boxes, 3 folders).

The Acc03.153 instalment comprises further papers (1 box).

The Acc03.175 instalment comprises folios 41-56 of Gilchrist’s personal correspondence, for the period 1987-1994, relating to research for his publication, Australians and Greeks (1 carton).

The Acc03.182 instalment includes photographs used in vols. 1 and 2 of Australians and Greeks; press clippings about Greeks in Australia; photocopy of the manuscript diary of Greek Foreign Minister Panayiotis Pipinelis, 1940s; documents, mostly in Greek, about the early Greek Church in Australia, 1898-1914; typescript of Michael Tsounis’ Ph.D. thesis, “Greek communities in Australia”, 1971; and, a copy of Byron Matarangas’ thesis, in French, on the protection of minorities under international law (1 carton).

The Acc04.148 instalment comprises folios 57-70 of Gilchrist’s correspondence files documenting Greek-Australian relations (1 carton).

The Acc04.188 instalment includes folios 71-77 of Gilchrist’s correspondence files pertaining to Australians and Greeks; source materials on Greek pirate-convicts, 1827-1829; and, source materials on the Greek Church in Australia, 1898-1939 (1 box).

Maniachi and others, in the Victorian Supreme Court, July 1927; the secret census of Greeks in Australia, 1916; Australian travellers and residents in Greece, 1919-1940; Greeks in Western Australia; and, Australians and Greeks (1 box).

The Acc07.167 instalment includes a copy of “A touch of Greece in Otho Street: the Australian café and Jim Boutieris”, by Peter McCarthy and presented at Inverell Town Hall, May 2007 (1 folder).

The Acc11.156 instalment comprises papers relating to Gilchrist’s career as a diplomat and research notes for his work Australians and Greeks. Papers include Department of Foreign Affairs despatches and reports; appointment sheets and invitations; general correspondence; lecture notes; passports, other official travel documentation, itineraries and memborabilia (includes menus, stickers, advertisements); promotional materials; clippings; newsletters; diary entries; Army Education Service papers and publications including “Jaquinotes” biographical and autobiographical notes. The instalment contains a signifcant number of University of Sydney student magazines (1933-1941) and two copies of Angry penguins including the original journal in which “Ern Malley’s” poem was published and subsequent issue relating to the poem (1944) (18 boxes).

The Acc12.039 instalment comprises correspondence, papers and memorabilia from Paul Panagopoulos regarding his time in Australia as a young man; correspondence regarding Gilchrist’s Medal of the Order of Australia; general papers, correspondence and 90th birthday cards (1 folder).
