Chinese residents in Melbourne against death sentence of a Chinese man
Abstract
This petition, signed by 79 Chinese residents of Melbourne, was addressed to Henry Barkly, Governor of Victoria appointed in 1856. It concerned the case of Sing-Lup, a Chinese man held at the Melbourne Gaol under death sentence for murder. The petitioners argued that Sing-Lup had been mentally ill for several years, displaying signs of insanity during his voyage to Australia and at the time of the alleged murder. They requested mercy from the Chief Governor on the grounds of Sing-Lup’s mental state. The petition contains signatures written in both Chinese and English.
