Le sourire: journal serieux hebdomadaire de Tahiti, Aout-septembre 1903

Abstract

Gauguin created his own journal “Le Sourire” in 1899, during his stays between Tahiti and the island of Hiva Oa (Marquesas Islands). It was self-published – handwritten and handprinted. Originally conceived as weekly, it was published monthly. It is thought that not more than thirty copies were produced at a time. See L. J. Bouge, ‘Le Sourire’ de Paul Gauguin. Collection complète en fac-simile, Paris, 1952.
