Lise Joubert Australian Diary and Almanac or Daily Memorandum Book (1853)

Abstract

This copy of the Australian Diary and Almanack for the year 1853 (Sydney: W. Moffitt, was 1853) was owned and written in by Lise Joubert, wife of Didier Numa Joubert, wine merchant, shipping agent and property developer. They, and their three children, were early residents of Hunters Hill. Lise Joubert writes on a daily basis. As is customary where this genre of daily writing is concerned, notes largely relate to the weather, visits received and paid, sowing, farm animals (births; slaughter; purchase and selling), visits “to Sydney” and purchases made there. The diary itself is held by the Hunters Hill Historical Society. An annotated translation of it into English had been made by Karin Speedy. Preceded by a critical introduction (also by Speedy) and a brief foreword by Beverley Sherry, the translation has been published online by the HH Historical Society: http://huntershillmuseum.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/KS-BS-Trans-Lise-Joubert-diary.pdf
