Text is an extract from de Castella’s forthcoming book, Les squatters Australiens (Paris : Hachette et Cie, 1861), but this article is copiously illustrated, whereas the book is unillustrated. Includes accounts of the Victorian goldfields, life at Dalry and Yering Station (east of Melbourne) including discussion of the local Aborigines, and a trip through western New South Wales visiting the grazing lands along the Namoi, Lachlan and Darling Rivers; includes engravings of drawings of Victorian Aboriginal people by Riou from photographs : scenes depict bark shelters, skin cloaks, corroborees; a camp; hunting scene on Murray River. |
