Description from source |
Certificate in Greek awarded to Enid Himmelhoch for her war time service in Crete and Greece. The certificate was received on 15 May 1980, however it is back-dated to 1940-1941. Enid Sylvia Himmelhoch was born in Armidale, NSW, in 1911. She trained as a nurse at St Vincent’s Hospital, Darlinghurst. When World War II broke out, she volunteered for army service and joined the 2/5 Australian General Hospital Division. She sailed from Sydney on the Queen Mary on 20 October 1940 for Palestine where the nursing sisters were attached to the 2/1 Australian General Hospital Division. In January 1941 the hospital was established at Rehovoth, near Tel Aviv. In April they were moved to Greece, however, the Allies were overcome by the Germans and the nurses were evacuated to Crete and then back to Palestine to re-group. From Palestine they were ordered to Abyssinia and when Japan entered the war it became apparent that they were needed closer to home. After a brief rest and recreation break in Armidale, they were despatched to New Guinea where the nurses treated battle casualties and tropical diseases. In May 1941, the nurses were posted to Bathurst to prepare for a posting in Morotai, Indonesia. Enid was stationed here when the war ended. In five and a half years of Army service, she distinguished herself in five theatres of war enduring the most extreme conditions and caring for her patients while her own life was in danger. She rose to the rank of Captain. Enid was discharged in 1946. Part of a collection of memorabilia which documents the achievements and journeys of Captain Enid Sylvia Himmelhoch (1911-1995), including; photo albums featuring army hospitals in New Guinea, evacuation from Crete in 1941, Palestine, Gaza, Greece, India, North Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia and Australi; postcards; her military service medals and a medal for the defence of Crete; an autographed flag of the 2/5th Australian General Hospital; demobilzation papers and; a Crossing the Equator certificate from the Manunda hospital ship. |
