Area: From Thailand, going east through Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand, French Polynesia and stopping at the western coast of North America.

Assumed to be plate 14 of the 1861 edition of, ‘Atlas illustre de geographie commerciale et industrielle’.

Map has illustrated margins containing views and text describing the peoples, population, flora, fauna and industries of the various ‘possessions’ of the Dutch, Spanish, English and French, in addition to independent nations. Both borders headed “Statistique commerciale et industrielle”.

The Australian continent is shown divided into “Colonies Anglaises”, that is, English Colonies. Shown as English territory are the present day borders of South Australia and the then European settled areas from Port Phillip, Victoria to Port Stephens, New South Wales. The European settlements in Western Australia, from Perth south to Albany are also shown, in addition to Tasmania, King Island and the Furneaux Group. The remaining area of the Australian coastline, being the majority, is shown as the territory of “Parties indigénes”. Descriptive information regarding Australia notes that the population was 220,407 and that the religon was “Protestante Anglicane”. The accompanying illustration shows Aboriginal people holding various tools and another man within a canoe. Also shown is a striped bandicoot and a Kangaroo or Wallaby.
