THE HAGUE, November 1 – The government will adopt a much more positive attitude towards emigration in the future. It is to be expected that an opportunity will be created for many unskilled workers to move to Australia. A number of 200,000 has already been mentioned, in addition to which New Zealand would like to include several tens of thousands. In government circles, the intention is to submit a bill in the not-too-distant future which will stipulate that the country’s treasury will pay a large part of the relocation costs.
The government has come up with these plans because it is increasingly questionable whether the ten million Dutch people would eventually be able to be fed on their own resources. With further industrialisation, employment will, of course, be increased. On the other hand, according to the latest data, the employment of one worker requires an investment of capital, estimated at an amount between 18,000 and 27,000 guilders.

Emigratie ongeschoolden. 200.000 ARBEIDERS NAAR AUSTRALIË. Overtocht grotendeels op ’s Rijks kosten (Van onze correspondent) DEN HAAG, 1 Nov. – De overheid zal in de toekomst een veel positievere houding gaan aannemen ten opzichte van de emigratie. Verwacht mag worden, dat voor een groot aantal ongeschoolde arbeiders een kans zal worden geschapen naar Australië te verhuizen. Genoemd is reeds een aantal van 200.000, waarnaast Nieuw-Zeeland enkele tienduizenden zou willen opnemen. In regeringskringen bestaat het voornemen binnen niet al te lange tijd een wetsvoorstel in te dienen, waarin wordt geregeld, dat een groot gedeelte van de kosten van de overtocht zal worden betaald uit ’s lands schatkist. Tot deze plannen is de regering gekomen, omdat het meer en meer de vraag wordt, of de tien miljoen Nederlanders op den duur op eigen boden zouden kunnen worden gevoed. Met verdere industrialisatie zal natuurlijk de werkgelegenheid we worden vergroot. Daartegenover staat, dat voor de tewerkstelling van één arbeider volgens de jongste gegevens een kapitaal moet worden geïnvesteerd, dat wordt geschat op een bedrag tussen 18.000 en 27.000 gulden. |
