Abstract
A young man is transported to Australia in the 1800s because of presumed crimes. He is sent to work in the English penal colony and hopefully regain his freedom. To do so, he has to face all kinds of dangers, including the ‘intrusive’ presence of the original inhabitants of Australia, the Aborigines. The young man’s white compatriots had no reservations about confiscating as much unoccupied land from these ‘barbarians’ (the aboriginals) as they wanted. The book also contains a substantial appendix dealing with the significant gold discoveries in Victoria.
