Verhandeling over eenige vroegere Zeetogten der Nederlanders
Abstract
Verhandeling over eenige vroegere Zeetogten der Nederlanders, Amsterdam 1825.
A seven-page Dutch essay based on François Valentijn’s account of how Antonie van Diemen, the Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies, encouraged geographical discoveries by Abel Tasman. It describes the voyages to Zuidland (the South Island), later also known as Nieuw Holland (New Holland). It also provides a description of Tasman’s voyages to Mauritius and other parts of Oceania and an illustration of the journeys to Statenland (New Zealand) on 13 December 1642 and that of the Vrienden eilanden (Friends islands). Other explorers, like Magellaan, James Cook, Tobias Furneaux, and Dirk Hartog, are also mentioned in the essay.
