Minder Nederlanders emigreren thans
Abstract
Article on the decline in numbers of Dutch migration to Australia.
Translation
Fewer Dutch people are currently emigrating
THE HAGUE — According to a report by the emigration service, 6,731 Dutch people emigrated to Australia last year, the lowest number since 1949.
The report attributes this reduction mainly to the housing shortage in Australia ‘which is particularly affecting the Dutch, who are accustomed to migrating as a family’. In the 5 years since the start of the implementation of the Dutch migration program, 300,000 Dutch people left for overseas countries, 100,000 of them to Australia, and the rest to Canada and South Africa, according to the report.
In 1957 only 45,000 Dutch people emigrated, compared to 54,000 in the previous year. For the first time since 1950, the Netherlands is facing a migration surplus in 1958, which is due to the repatriation of Dutch nationals from Indonesia.
