Gratitude
Some of our lines in our last issue gave Australians the impression that many immigrants were ungrateful towards Australia. It is not so. It’s definitely not us.
With gratitude, we acknowledge that Australia has given us and many others a chance for a new life. Most immigrants here would hardly be alive if Australia hadn’t taken them in; many may have already forgotten this.
We further recognise—with gratitude—that many immigrants have been afforded opportunities here that they did not have in Europe. And we know that you can achieve something in Australia if you work hard. Some people also forget this.
But that doesn’t mean we can’t criticise. Our criticism is only positive. It is based on facts. And positive criticism can only be helpful. It should also not be forgotten that not only do immigrants benefit from their presence in the country, but the country benefits from immigrants. Australia needs people, but it doesn’t need dissatisfied people. And there are a lot of dissatisfied people. We look for the reason for this dissatisfaction and find that it is not always the immigrants’ fault that they are dissatisfied. And so, we try to lay out the reasons, to explain them, in the hope that something good will come. On the other hand, we also know very well that it is very difficult for some people to be satisfied.
If we think the immigration plan needs to be revised until there is more work in Australia, that does not show ingratitude. The Immigration Minister, Mr. Holt, announced last week that only experienced skilled workers from Italy and Holland were currently being accepted as immigrants, so he seems to agree with us.
And when we point out that specialists are street workers and say that they should work in their own professions, this is a fact. When we report that not all Australians are friendly to newcomers, that is also a fact.

EDITORIAL Dankbarkeit Manche unserer Zeilen in unserer letzten Ausgabe haben bei Australiern den Eindruck er-weckt, dass viele Einwanderer undankbar Australien gegenüber seien. Dem ist nicht so. Wir sind es bestimmt nicht. Wir erkennen an — mit Dankbarkeit — das Australien uns und vielen anderen, eine Chance für ein neues Leben gegeben hat. Die meisten Einwanderer, die hier sind, wären wohl kaum am Leben, hatte Australien sie nicht aufgenommen. Viele haben das vielleicht schon vergessen. Wir erkennen weiter an —mit Dankbarkeit — dass vielen Einwanderer hier manche Gelegenheit geboten wurde, die sie in Europa nicht hatten. Und wir wissen, dass man in Australien etwas erreichen kann, wenn man schwer arbeitet. Dieses wird von manchen auch vergessen. Aber das alles bedeutet nicht, dass wir nicht kritisieren dürfen. Unsere Kritik ist nur positiv. Sie beruht auf Tatsachen. Und eine positive Kritik kann nur nützlich sein. Auch darf nicht vergessen werden dass nicht nur Einwanderer von ihrer Anwesenheit im Land profitieren, sondern das Land profitiert von Einwanderern. Australien braucht Menschen, aber unzufriedene Menschen braucht es nicht. Und es gibt viele unzufriedene Menschen. Und wir suchen nach dem Grund dieser Unzufriedenheit und wir finden, dass es nicht immer die Schuld der Einwanderer ist, dass sie unzufrieden sind. Und so versuchen wir, die Grunde darzulegen, sie zu erklären, in der Hoffnung, dass etwas Gutes dabei herauskommt. Andererseits wissen wir auch ganz genau, dass es für manche sehr schwer ist, zufriedengestellt zu werden. Wenn wir meinen der Einwanderungsplan müsse revidiert werden, bis es mehr Arbeit in Australien gibt, so zeigt das keine Undankbarkeit. Der Einwanderungsminister Herr Holt hat bereits vorige Woche bekannt gegeben, das zur Zeit aus Italien und Holland nur noch erfahrene Facharbeiter als Einwanderer genommen wurden. Er scheint also unserer Ansicht zu sein. Und wenn wir darauf aufmerksam machen, dass Spezialisten Strassenarbeiter sind und sagen, dass sie in ihren eigenen Berufen arbeiten sollten, so ist das eine Tatsache. Wenn wir berichten dass nicht alle Australier Neuankömmlingen freundlich gegenüber gesinnt sind, so ist das auch eine Tatsache. Eine positive Kritik kann nur zum Nutzen des Landes sein. Nicht nur können Einwanderer von Australiern lernen, sondern auch Australier von Einwanderern. |
